“Crystal Bamboo,” can you imagine a name more intriguing for a place? We’re standing in Phum Tang Russei, part of the larger Russey Keo district in Phnom Penh. Russey Keo means Crystal Bamboo. It is now the most populous district of Phnom Penh as of 2019.

Let’s journey back through time. Royal Chronicles tell tales of King Baksei Chamkrong seeking refuge here. Fleeing his enemies, he found safety on an island then known as Russey Keo. Another legend speaks of Buddhagosa. A storm disrupted his voyage from Langka. He landed here with sacred texts and the Emerald Buddha. This statue, the Phra Kaeo Morakot, gave the area its name.

In the 17th century, Phum Tang Russei became a hub for foreigners. Dutch merchants settled along the Tonle Sap River. They even gave their name to a local neighborhood: Hoaland. Catholic missionaries arrived too. King Norodom gifted them land in 1867. Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church was built. Phum Tang Russei became a gathering place. Annamites of various faiths made their home here.

Since the 1990s, Phum Tang Russei has transformed. Land reclamation projects reshaped the area. Dredging zones began in 1991. Sand pumping expanded the city. This development wasn’t without problems. Forced evictions and land disputes arose. Yet, major projects like Camko City emerged. This urban zone is a multi-billion dollar investment.

Administratively, Phum Tang Russei has seen many changes. In 2008, Russey Keo split into two districts. Sen Sok was formed. Communes were added and subtracted. As of 2020, Russey Keo includes seven communes and thirty villages.

Phum Tang Russei is more than just a place. It is a tapestry woven with legends, settlements, and modern development. From royal escapes to foreign traders to urban expansion, its story echoes through time. As we leave, remember the name: Phum Tang Russei, a place where history and progress intertwine.
