Hidden within Hamburg’s vibrant Sternschanze district lies Wagenplatz Zomia. It’s a unique community. Wagenplatz Zomia is a testament to alternative living. This isn’t your typical neighborhood. Instead of apartment buildings, you’ll find converted trucks, colorful wagons, and small, self-built homes. Each dwelling reflects the individual spirit of its resident. Metal sculptures and young birch trees decorate the area. Roses and herbs sprout from raised beds amidst the gravel. Wagenplatz Zomia is a bohemian oasis amidst the urban hustle. Kai Mehring, a 36-year-old resident, calls a converted black truck his home. Atop the truck bed sits a small wooden house. Light pours in through black-framed windows. Inside, a disco ball reflects sunlight from the star-shaped window. Mehring has lived on Wagenplatz Zomia for eight years. He works part-time for a transportation consulting firm. His minimalist lifestyle is reflected in his all-black attire and the self-built furniture in his compact home. He believes in not getting attached to material possessions. Wagenplatz Zomia is home to 15 diverse individuals. New members are welcomed after unanimous agreement from the existing community. While guests are generally welcome, there’s a tension with curious passersby. Some confuse the Wagenplatz with the nearby Central Park bar. Residents value their privacy. This is their home, not a public space. Wagenplatz Zomia has faced a long-standing struggle with the city of Hamburg over its existence. This is a common issue for Wagenplätze, often seen as occupying valuable urban land. The planned demolition of the nearby Sternbrücke in 2020 poses a direct threat. The construction zone would encompass the Wagenplatz. Despite this, residents like Mehring remain resilient. They are determined to stay. They remember the fate of another Wagenplatz, relocated to a former landfill. They view resistance as their only hope. Ironically, even as they fight for their home, residents adhere to regulations. The Wohnwagengesetz (caravan law) allows temporary settlements on vacant land. Wagenplatz Zomia secured an extension until the end of 2019. Their temporary status reflects the city’s intent to eventually move residents into permanent housing. Yet, some political factions are open to supporting Wagenplätze. The SPD in Altona has expressed willingness to help Zomia find a solution after the current permit expires. More than just a place to live, Wagenplatz Zomia represents a conscious choice. Residents prioritize living over working. They embrace a simpler, more affordable lifestyle. They accept the inherent insecurity. The possibility of eviction always looms. Despite the challenges, the community thrives, a testament to the enduring spirit of alternative living in the heart of Hamburg.
