Gazing across Siheung-si today, it’s hard to imagine this bustling city as a quiet farming town. Siheung-si, located in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, has undergone a dramatic transformation. Siheung-si’s story is one of rapid growth and industrialization, intertwined with a rich history dating back to the Three Kingdoms period. Originally part of the Baekje kingdom, Siheung-si’s location has always been strategically important. The city’s modern development began in the late 20th century. The city officially became Siheung-si on January 1, 1989. Prior to this, it was part of Siheung County, which encompassed a much larger area. The creation of Siheung-si, along with the separate cities of Gunpo and Uiwang, marked a new chapter in the region’s development. Siheung-si initially had a population of just 93,000. This number tripled within a decade. The growth was fueled by the construction of large apartment complexes, catering to the increasing urban population. Siheung-si is part of a significant industrial complex. This complex plays a key role in the region’s economy. Companies like Hansung Machinery Co. have established their headquarters here. Educational institutions also contribute to Siheung-si’s development. Korea Polytechnic University, established in 1997, and Kyonggi Institute of Technology, reorganized in 1999, are located within the city. In 2010, Seoul National University acquired a large plot of land in Siheung-si. The plan was to create a global campus with a biomedical complex, research hospital, and educational facilities. Siheung-si boasts several notable landmarks. The Lotus Theme Park offers a tranquil escape, with various lotus and waterlily varieties. Oido Island and Soraesan Mountain provide opportunities for outdoor recreation. The city also has a modern attraction: Wave Park. Opened in 2020, it features the world’s largest artificial wave pool for surfing. Siheung-si’s story reflects South Korea’s rapid economic and urban growth. From a small farming community, it has evolved into a major industrial and residential center. This vibrant city continues to develop and modernize, embracing its past while looking towards the future.
