The cornerstone. It whispers a story. A story of the Tremont Terrace Moravian Church. Right here on Pilgrim Avenue in the Bronx.

Founded in 1872. It began as the Second Moravian Church of New York City. Its first home was far from this peaceful Bronx setting. It was on East 6th Street near Avenue C in Manhattan. Imagine the bustling city streets. The noise the smells the crowds. A stark contrast to the quiet dignity of this building today.

Then came the move to the Bronx. First to Wilkins Avenue and Jennings Street in 1906. Then in 1923 a grander relocation. The congregation moved into the former Ferris Mansion on Mayflower Avenue. A stately home transformed into a house of worship. Can you picture the stained glass the hymns the prayers echoing in those rooms?

Finally in 1929 the present church was built. This brick structure replaced the mansion. The old mansion became a parsonage and Sunday school. It remained so until the mid-1960s. Then an addition was built onto the church itself. The church stands as a testament to perseverance. It stands as a witness to faith’s endurance.

This is not just a building. It’s a living history. Its walls have absorbed the prayers of generations. The joys the sorrows the triumphs and the losses. Each brick holds stories untold. Stories of German immigrants finding solace in a new land. Stories of community formed and sustained. Stories of faith unwavering and resilient.

The organ. A magnificent instrument. It has resided in this church since 1929. It was built by Geo. Kilgen & Son of St. Louis. Opus 4415. It is an electro-pneumatic marvel. Two manuals twenty registers four stops four ranks. It’s more than just a musical instrument. It’s the voice of the church. Its voice rises in praise. It sings of hope and comfort.

This church is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a vibrant part of the Bronx’s history. A constant presence in the lives of many. The Tremont Terrace Moravian Church. A place of worship a sanctuary a beacon. A testament to enduring faith. Take a moment. Feel the history breathe around you.
