“A loving church on fire for the Lord,” that is how many describe New Hope Baptist Church of Los Angeles. This church has joyfully spread the Gospel for over 115 years. New Hope Baptist Church shows no signs of slowing down.

Founded in January 1906, New Hope Baptist Church held its first meeting at True Reformer’s Hall. About 100 members attended that first service. The church quickly became a vital part of the African American community.

In 1945, Dr. Bernard O. Byrd became the pastor. He expanded the church’s outreach. Soon, the congregation outgrew their original space. Dr. Byrd and the trustees chose Paul R. Williams to design a new building. They wanted the new church to be an educational center for the growing African American community.

Williams had designed many religious buildings by the 1950s. He knew how to work with committees and ministers. Everyone had strong opinions about the new sanctuary. Williams’ design for New Hope Baptist Church was not traditional. It did not follow historic revival styles. The solid building showed its importance to the African American community. Its clean lines reflected modern Los Angeles. The two-tiered sanctuary featured a lighted baptismal pool. A sectional choir stand reminded everyone of their spiritual purpose.

In October 1954, Dr. Byrd led the congregation into their new home. The address was 5200 South Central Avenue. Today, New Hope Baptist Church continues to grow. Its social services expand to meet community needs.

Joy Randall is the chair of the Trustee Board. She joined New Hope when she was nine years old. She said it is a family church where everyone feels welcome. Patricia Henderson has been a member since she was 10. She treasures the Bible lessons she learned from Pastor James S. McKnight.

New Hope’s community outreach has always been important. Members support food distribution and tutoring programs. The church also has a benevolence arm. This helps people in need who come to the church. New Hope offers assistance to individuals facing problems. Church members sit down and talk to them. They try to find solutions.

New Hope Senior Villa provides affordable apartments. It sits on Central Avenue near 50th Street. The B.O. Byrd Memorial Christian Education Center also offers programs.

Currently, New Hope Baptist Church seeks a new pastor. The pastor will preach, teach, and direct church ministries. They will also promote the growth of New Hope.

The Paul Williams-designed sanctuary remains impressive. It carries out the ministry’s motto. That motto is: Transforming Lives Through Christ Centered Ministries. New Hope Baptist Church is open to all Christians. It welcomes people of all ages and backgrounds. The church offers in-person worship services every Sunday. You can also access services via live stream.
