What if a park could whisper stories of remembrance? Here at Pelham Veteran’s Memorial, the very ground beneath our feet holds echoes of gratitude and sacrifice. Pelham Veteran’s Memorial, originally envisioned as “Victory Park,” stands as a testament to Pelham’s resilience and respect for those who served in World War I. Initially, the town considered a different location south of Town Hall. They even imagined a “Victory Memorial Building” there. But plans changed, and in 1923, the Town Board secured this very spot, north of Town Hall, to create Pelham Veteran’s Memorial. The land was purchased from Mrs. May Gage for $12,000, a hefty sum at the time. The town even turned down offers of $14,000 from developers wanting to build apartments. They recognized the importance of a dedicated space for remembrance. Pelham Veteran’s Memorial is more than just a park. It’s a living tribute to the nine Pelham men who lost their lives during the war. Nine maple trees were planted in their honor, a gift from long-time Pelham resident and Chief of Police, Philip Gargan. Imagine the scene on Memorial Day, May 26, 1924. A thousand people gathered, trolley cars halted, the streets lined with flags. A Civil War veteran, Major Charles A. Walker, unveiled the monument, its bronze plaque gleaming in the sun. The dedication ceremony at Pelham Veteran’s Memorial included patriotic songs, an invocation, and a powerful speech by Lieut. Col. David L’Esperance. He spoke of duty, sacrifice, and the importance of honoring those who served. Pelham Veteran’s Memorial serves as a quiet reminder of the sacrifices made during wartime. It’s a place where we can reflect on the courage and patriotism of those who served, and the lasting impact of their actions on the community.
