“Ephphatha,” meaning “to open” in Aramaic echoes around us today. This is the story of Saint John’s Deaf Center. This center has been a cornerstone for Detroit’s Catholic deaf community for 50 years. Saint John’s Deaf Center is more than just a place. It is a sanctuary where deaf Catholics find belonging and encounter God’s love.

Let’s journey back to September 11 1974. Cardinal John F. Dearden dedicated the Saint John’s Deaf Center Mass at Ascension Parish’s school building in Warren. This marked a pivotal moment. It provided a permanent location for deaf Catholics to receive sacraments. The center was initially staffed by the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales.

But the roots of deaf ministry in Detroit stretch back even further. Before Saint John’s Deaf Center existed Fr. Henry Kaufmann of St. Joseph Parish recognized a need. Deaf Catholics lacked a priest who could celebrate Mass in sign language. Fr. Kaufmann learned American Sign Language. He offered the first Mass for the deaf community at St. Joseph’s in 1914. This led to the establishment of the St. Joseph Ephphatha Society.

Fr. Michael Depcik directed the Saint John’s Deaf Center from 2011 to 2023. He described it as a hidden gem. He noted the invisibility that the deaf community often feels. Unlike other cultural groups or people with visible disabilities deaf people can easily go unnoticed.

Saint John’s Deaf Center addresses this invisibility. It provides a space where deaf individuals can fully participate in their faith. Mass at Saint John’s Deaf Center is a unique experience. The priest signs the Mass. An interpreter translates for the hearing community. This inclusive approach highlights the visual aspects of faith.

Fr. Depcik explained how the deaf community emphasizes seeing God’s presence. They use hands and facial expressions to connect with God and each other. This visual focus offers insights into gospel messages that hearing individuals might miss.

The story of Jesus healing the deaf man in Mark 7:31-37 resonates deeply. Jesus took the man away from the crowd. He established a one-on-one connection through gestures. This mirrors the experiences of many deaf individuals in isolating situations. Saint John’s Deaf Center seeks to break down these barriers. It creates a community where everyone feels understood.

Diane Knight found solace and support at Saint John’s Deaf Center after losing her husband. Paul Kuplicki has volunteered since its opening. His deaf parents instilled in him the importance of such a community.

Saint John’s Deaf Center has been a beacon of hope for 50 years. It is a place where deaf Catholics can worship. They can connect and feel like they truly belong. The center embodies the meaning of “Ephphatha” being open to the community. Saint John’s Deaf Center ensures that deaf individuals are not just seen but truly understood and cherished.
