Lille’s Rue de Jemmapes. A street echoing with history, stretching 600 meters from Avenue du Peuple-Belge to the Esplanade. Rue de Jemmapes isn’t just a street; it’s a time capsule. Originally opened as Rue Dauphine around 1670, the street extended to the Canal de l’Araignée. Imagine Lille back then, expanding under Louis XIV’s reign. Later, the canal was filled, becoming Rue Maracci, and Rue Dauphine reached Avenue du Peuple-Belge. It even absorbed the smaller Rue du Pont à Diables. The French Revolution arrived. In 1793, Rue Dauphine took on a new name: Rue de Jemmapes. A tribute to the French victory at the Battle of Jemmapes in 1792. Between 1815 and 1830, it briefly reverted to Rue Dauphine before becoming Rue de Jemmapes once again. This street has seen Lille grow and change. At numbers 38 and 40, a chromolithography and cardboard factory, once a vital part of Lille’s industry, has been repurposed into modern apartments and offices. Rue de Jemmapes crosses Rue Royale, Rue Saint-André, Rue du Metz, and Rue Maracci. Each intersection tells a story, weaving together the fabric of Lille’s past and present. As you walk along Rue de Jemmapes today, you trace the steps of revolutionaries, factory workers, and everyday citizens. The street reminds us how much a city can transform while its spirit endures.
