On a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the First Baptist Church of Pacific Beach stands as a testament to community spirit. It’s more than just a building. It’s a story woven from the dreams and dedication of a small group of people. In 1943, sixteen residents of Pacific Beach, led by John G. Holder, felt the call to establish a new church in their community. They began their journey, naming their nascent congregation Pacific Beach Baptist Church. Their initial meetings, filled with hope and purpose, laid the foundation for what would become a beloved local landmark. Years passed, and the small congregation grew, their vision expanding along with their numbers. In the mid-1970s, the church acquired land at the foot of Mount Soledad, a location boasting breathtaking views of Mission Bay, Point Loma, and the San Diego skyline. The construction of the First Baptist Church of Pacific Beach at this new site became a labor of love. Members of the church, skilled in various trades, dedicated their evenings and weekends to building their new spiritual home. Imagine them, brick by brick, beam by beam, raising the church from the ground, their shared purpose a unifying force. Finally, on October 26, 1975, the First Baptist Church of Pacific Beach opened its doors at 4747 Soledad Mountain Road. Leading the congregation during this significant transition was Reverend Carl Whitlock. He served as pastor for an impressive 48 years, guiding the church through decades of growth and change, until his retirement in 2016. In a touching tribute, the church honored him with the title of Pastor Emeritus later that year. The First Baptist Church of Pacific Beach remains a vibrant part of the community, a testament to the enduring power of faith and collective effort. Its story is a reminder that even small beginnings can blossom into something grand and meaningful, enriching the lives of many for generations to come.
