Whispers of ancient settlements drift through Changban. This area in Guangzhou’s Tianhe District holds secrets dating back thousands of years. Changban’s story begins in the Neolithic period. Evidence suggests humans lived here between 2,200 and 4,000 years ago. Fast forward to the Song Dynasty. A man named Huang established a village here. He named it “Changban” because of the swampy area nestled among the mountains. “Ban” means “swamp” in Cantonese. Even today, remnants of this history linger in the well-preserved ancestral temples. Changban wasn’t always bustling. In the 1980s, factories began to spring up. Zippers, table knives, scissors, decorative lighting, and toys were all manufactured here. The factories drew people to Changban, transforming the quiet village. The modern Changban Station, part of Guangzhou Metro Line 6, opened on December 28, 2013. This underground station, located on Tianyuan Road, connects Changban to the wider city. But Changban hasn’t forgotten its roots. Every year, on the 16th day of the first lunar month, the village bursts into life. The Lantern Festival celebrations include a vibrant cruise, traditional lion dances, and impressive kung fu performances. This echoes the village’s rich cultural heritage. Changban’s commitment to recreation and sports is woven into its fabric. A cultural and recreational activity center appeared in 1994. The Changban music society followed in 1996. Changban Park opened in 1999, providing a space for athletic events. Located in Changban is the Guangzhou Polytechnic of Sports. Formerly the Weilun Sports School, this institution has nurtured remarkable talent. This includes Olympic champions like Chen Aisen, a two-time Olympic diving gold medalist. It’s also the training ground for world champions like Fan Zhendong, the world’s top-ranked table tennis player. From Neolithic settlements to Olympic champions, Changban’s story is one of evolution and vibrant community.
