Didn’t they use to separate boys and girls here? Right before us stands Osaka City Naka-michi Elementary School. It is a public elementary school in Higashinari Ward, Osaka City.

Let’s delve into the history. The school was first established in 1915. It was known as the Higashinari-gun Nakamoto Second Ordinary Elementary School. At that time, Nakamoto First Elementary School was for boys. Nakamoto Second Elementary School was exclusively for girls.

In 1917, they stopped separating school districts. Both schools became co-educational. In 1925, Nakamoto Village was integrated into Osaka City. The school’s name changed to Osaka City Nakamoto Second Ordinary Elementary School.

In 1934, tragedy struck. A typhoon caused the school building to collapse. Eight children died. Around 30 children were caught in the collapse.

In 1940, the name changed again. It became Osaka City Naka-michi Ordinary Elementary School. Then in 1941, it was renamed Osaka City Naka-michi National School. This change occurred due to the National School Order. Finally, in 1947, it became Osaka City Naka-michi Elementary School. This renaming was due to educational reforms.

During World War II, children were evacuated. In 1944, students were moved to Uda, Nara Prefecture. In 1945, an air raid destroyed the school building.

Today, Osaka City Naka-michi Elementary School continues to educate children. The school has unique approaches. It uses a four-term system. The school also focuses on pottery and English activities. Graduates continue their studies. They attend Osaka City Tamatsu Junior High School.
