Gazing up at the Iglesia de San José de la Montaña, imagine the echoes of centuries-old prayers swirling within its walls. The Iglesia de San José de la Montaña stands proudly on Calle Fernández de la Hoz, a testament to its enduring presence in Madrid’s vibrant tapestry. This baroque-style church, with its Latin cross plan and central nave flanked by two side aisles, beckons us to explore its rich history and artistic treasures. The Iglesia de San José de la Montaña has two levels. Sadly, the upper level, home to a grand organ, remains inaccessible due to ongoing restoration. Outside, the facade’s gable, adorned with decorative flagons and floors, culminates in a striking sculpture of the Virgen del Carmen. Three entrances invite us in, their metal grill doors forged by the skilled hands of Juan Gil. Inside the Iglesia de San José de la Montaña, two magnificent features command our attention. A majestic dome, embellished with intricate stucco work, crowns the church. A grand cupola adds to the sense of awe and reverence. Nearby, a beautiful chapel dedicated to St. Teresa awaits, adorned with captivating paintings. The chapel’s centerpiece, a representation of St. Teresa, draws the eye with its beauty and serenity. Semi-circular arches frame the doorways, leading us deeper into the church’s embrace. Sculptures and representations of religious figures adorn the interior, while the ceiling boasts a breathtaking array of paintings. Among the sculptures, the less prominent figures are crafted in the Doric style. However, two figures stand out, demanding our attention: the Christ of Desamparo, affectionately known as the Siete Reviernes, and a statue of Saint Joseph near St. Teresa’s chapel. These more significant figures are rendered in the elaborate Corinthian style, recognizable by the distinctive acanthus leaves. As you stand before the Iglesia de San José de la Montaña, absorb the weight of its history, the artistry of its design, and the devotion that has filled its sacred space for generations.
