Lost in the quiet contemplation of this Hamburg memorial a poignant story unfolds. Before you stands the Denkmal Alfons Berger. This isn’t just a monument it’s a testament to a young life cut short. Alfons Reinoud Berger a student at the Sint-Thomascollege in Venlo was only 19 when he died.

He was a member of the Dutch resistance the Landelijke Organisatie. He risked his life to help others. He delivered messages. He guided Jewish children to safety. He even helped downed Allied pilots escape. His actions were acts of profound courage and selflessness.

Alfons was the son of Venlo’s mayor. This gave him access to information and resources others didn’t have. Yet he put himself in grave danger to aid others. He collaborated closely with chaplain Jac Naus another resistance member. Their collaboration highlights the network of support within the resistance.

In February 1944 a fellow resistance member was captured. He revealed Alfons’ name. Alfons was arrested along with many others. He spent time in Maastricht before being sent to Camp Amersfoort. He was later transferred to Neuengamme concentration camp. There he died on January 22 1945 a victim of exhaustion.

His sister Reintje remembered him as a quiet boy who chose resistance independently. He saw it as a necessary duty a sacrifice he was willing to make. Before every dangerous mission Alfons visited the chapel. His faith sustained him during difficult times.

The Denkmal Alfons Berger honors his bravery his sacrifice his quiet heroism. It is a reminder of the devastating impact of war and the importance of remembering those who fought against injustice. It’s a small but significant memorial in a city with a rich but often complex history. Look closely at the inscription. Reflect on the young man it commemorates. Let this place serve as a reminder to us all.
