Whispers of “Golgotha” echoed through the burgeoning streets of Berlin. It was 1898. The Golgatha-Kirche, a new beginning, was rising. The old chapel, once sufficient, now strained under the weight of a growing congregation. Here, at Borsigstraße 6, the faithful gathered, their voices blending in anticipation. The Golgatha-Kirche wasn’t just a building. It was a testament to their faith. A beacon of hope. Designed by Max Spitta, the Golgatha-Kirche borrowed from the elegance of North German Brick Gothic. Its exterior, austere yet captivating, stood as a stark contrast to the vibrant life within. The square tower, a proud sentinel, reached towards the heavens, a full 61 meters tall. Its main portal, a masterpiece of intricate ornamentation, welcomed all who entered. Inside, the Golgatha-Kirche unfolded like a grand tapestry. A cruciform layout, bathed in light filtering through the five-meter wide circular skylight in the vaulted ceiling. The wooden galleries, supported by columns adorned with evangelist symbols and foliage, overlooked the main sanctuary. Offering 1000 seats, the Golgatha-Kirche embraced a community. The original stained glass, a vibrant narrative of biblical scenes and figures, was sadly lost during the tumultuous years of World War II. Yet, from the ashes, new beauty emerged. In 1966, Lothar Mannewitz, a gifted artist from Rostock, crafted a new narrative in glass. A serene blend of blues and whites, these windows brought a sense of tranquility to the space, reflecting the enduring spirit of the Golgatha-Kirche. The altar, a masterpiece in carved oak and gold, held a poignant depiction of the crucifixion, a scene that resonated deeply with the church’s name. The Taufstein, a swirling dance of Art Nouveau motifs, bore witness to countless baptisms. The pulpit, carved from oak in early Gothic style, echoed with sermons of hope and faith. The Golgatha-Kirche, more than just bricks and mortar, became a sanctuary for a community, a place where history and faith intertwine. Even the air within seemed to hold the echoes of prayers, hymns, and the quiet contemplation of generations. This sacred space, forever etched in the heart of Berlin, continues to stand as a testament to the enduring power of faith. The Golgatha-Kirche whispers its stories to all who listen.
