“This is our home” Reverend Laurence Lazar once said. That’s the feeling you get standing before St. George’s Romanian Orthodox Church. This isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of a community.

St. George’s Romanian Orthodox Church in Detroit holds a special place in history. It’s the oldest Romanian Orthodox parish in Michigan. It’s the cornerstone of Detroit’s Romanian community. In fact for a time it was even the largest Romanian Orthodox parish in all of North America.

Imagine the early 1900s. Romanian immigrants poured into Detroit seeking work in the booming auto industry. They faced hardship. They toiled for low wages. Many lived in crowded boarding houses. Yet they clung to their faith. Their first church stood at Russell and Hancock near what is now I-75 and Warren Avenue. This humble building anchored their new neighborhood. It became a center of their lives.

These weren’t just factory workers. They became business owners too. They opened corner stores. Their children thrived. They went to school. They became doctors lawyers and even financial managers.

Then in the 1950s and 60s Detroit’s population shifted. St. George’s moved to Southfield. The original church was demolished. The new location is further out from the city center. Some questioned the move but it reflected the changing demographics of the region. It was consecrated in 1961. Southfield became the new geographic center.

Today St. George’s stands as a beautiful church. It has mosaics of saints. The architecture reflects the style of churches in Northeast Romania. Inside are colorful murals. The iconostas a screen of saints is a stunning example of Romanian folk art. It’s a place of worship. It’s a cultural center. It’s a reminder of a community’s enduring faith and remarkable journey. It’s home.
