Remember the stench of garbage? That is not how Digital Media City began. It began as a landfill. Can you believe this high-tech hub was once a mountain of waste? I will tell you about the incredible transformation of Digital Media City.
Digital Media City or DMC is Seoul’s digital technology complex. It houses networked offices, apartments, and cultural centers. You can find it in the Mapo District. Construction finished in 2006. It is a high-tech center for broadcasting, movies, games, and music.
Imagine this area as Nanjido island from 1978 to 1993. It was Seoul’s landfill. Trash piled up to 95 meters high and two kilometers long. That is like 34 Great Pyramids of Giza.
In 1996, Seoul started projects to stabilize the area. They reinforced slopes and minimized sludge. They captured harmful gases. This gas heated the Seoul World Cup Stadium.
In March 1997, the area became a housing development zone. Goh Kun, the mayor of Seoul, announced a project in 1998. It was called New Seoul Town Development. The plan turned Sangam into Seoul’s secondary center. The plan included World Cup Park and Digital Media City.
Digital Media City is part of the Millennium City project. It sits 7 kilometers from Seoul’s business district. Millennium City includes World Cup Soccer Park. It also includes the restored Nanji-do landfill.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government provided the IT infrastructure. They offered tax incentives and affordable land. This attracted companies like LG Telecom and Samsung SDS. Media companies like MBC, SBS, and JTBC also moved here. You can also find the Korean Film Archive here.
Residents of Digital Media City are called Denizens. This is because of their love for digital technology. Dennis Frenchman and Michael Joroff advised on the development. They also worked on MediaCityUK in England.
Digital Media City has subway access. You can take Line 6, AREX, or the Gyeongui Line. The area is now a hub for Hallyu content. Many restaurants also call Digital Media City home.
Digital Media City shows Seoul’s amazing development. It transformed from a landfill to a high-tech city. Digital Media City stands as a symbol of innovation. A true testament to Seoul’s miracle on the Han River.
