Slipping through time, imagine Detroit in 1894. A bustling city, on the cusp of a new era. Right here, at the corner of Griswold and State, a steel skeleton reaches for the sky. This is the story of Hyde Park and the Chamber of Commerce Building, a testament to Detroit’s ambition. Hyde Park isn’t just green space. It’s a witness to Detroit’s ever-changing skyline. The Chamber of Commerce Building, designed by Spier & Rohns, was Detroit’s tallest building for a brief, shining moment. A thirteen-story giant, it was one of the first steel-framed structures in the city, marking a shift from brick and mortar to steel and glass. Hyde Park watched as horse-drawn carriages gave way to the rumble of automobiles. In 1920, the city government moved out, and the Detroit Savings Bank, a long-time tenant, took ownership. The building, now known as the Detroit Savings Bank Building, continued to evolve alongside Hyde Park. The park saw renovations, redesigns, and the rise and fall of a transit hub. Through it all, the Detroit Savings Bank Building stood tall, its Richardsonian Romanesque architecture a reminder of a bygone era. Hyde Park has seen it all. From Finney’s Barn, a crucial stop on the Underground Railroad, to the statue of Stevens T. Mason, Michigan’s first governor, the park has borne witness to history unfolding. And what about that steel giant beside Hyde Park? In 1986, the United Foundation made significant changes. The light court facing Grand River was enclosed in glass, capped with a peaked glass roof, a modern touch to a historical structure. Hyde Park, with its quiet green expanse, offers a moment of reflection amidst the city’s buzz. It whispers stories of ambition and change, of progress and preservation. As you stand here, consider the layers of history beneath your feet, the echoes of the past mingling with the pulse of the present. The story of Hyde Park and the Detroit Savings Bank Building is a Detroit story, a tale of a city constantly reinventing itself, yet always rooted in its rich and complex past.
