Picture these colossal columns. They stand as silent witnesses to centuries of history. This is the Olympieio in Athens. The Temple of Olympian Zeus.

For over six hundred years its construction spanned generations. Athenian tyrants initially started the project. They envisioned a temple surpassing all others. Their ambition was grand. They wanted to create the greatest temple in the ancient world. However their rule ended. The ambitious project was abandoned. For centuries it remained incomplete a testament to unfinished dreams.

Later the Seleucid king Antiochus IV Epiphanes revived the project. He aimed to embody Zeus. He sought to complete the grand temple. He hired the Roman architect Decimus Cossutius. The design was altered. It changed from Doric to Corinthian. The material shifted from limestone to Pentelic marble a more expensive but superior material. Yet even Antiochus’s efforts stalled with his death. The temple remained unfinished.

It was finally completed under the Roman Emperor Hadrian. He dedicated it in 132 AD. The massive temple included 104 colossal columns. A colossal statue of Zeus filled the cella. It was made of ivory and gold. This was one of the largest cult statues of its time. The temple was the largest in Greece. The entire complex included a walled precinct filled with statues. Many honored Hadrian himself.

The Olympieio’s glory was short lived. A barbarian invasion in 267 AD pillaged the temple. It fell into disuse. Later centuries saw its stones plundered. They were used for other buildings in Athens. Only sixteen gigantic columns remain standing today. They stand as silent reminders of this colossal temple. Its story unfolds before you. The Olympieio. A testament to human ambition. A legacy of empires.
