Can you feel the energy of a suburb that blossomed later than its neighbours? Alexandra Hills is a testament to Redland’s growth. It sits comfortably between Cleveland and Capalaba. Let’s explore its story together.

Alexandra Hills got its name from developers Aspley Homes Pty Ltd. They were likely inspired by Princess Alexandra. She toured Queensland during the State centenary celebrations of 1959. The suburb’s development was spurred by Finucane Road’s completion. The Vienna Woods estate was the first area developed. This was east of the primary school. By 1976, Alexandra Hills was the fastest-growing region in the shire. About 5000 people called it home by 1980.

The Alexandra Hills drive-in shopping centre opened in November 1979. American comedienne Phyllis Diller did the honors. By the mid-1980s, Alexandra Hills had several schools. There were two state primary schools, a Catholic primary school, and a state high school. A colonial-style hotel opened in 1988. A third state primary school opened in 1991.

Alexandra Hills is not just houses and hotels. Linear parks run along watercourses. Conservation parks protect squirrel and greater gliders. In 2009, the State government gave land to Redland City Council. This created an environmental reserve for koala habitat. It’s on Windemere Road.

Let’s talk about community. Alexandra Hills State School opened in 1975. St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School followed in 1980. Vienna Woods State School opened its doors in 1985. Alexandra Hills State High School began in 1987. Hilliard State School opened in 1991. The Sycamore School provides special education. It opened in 2017.

What about amenities? The Redland City Council’s mobile library visits the Bluebell Street Shops. The Anglican Church of the Resurrection stands on Newhaven Street. Alexandra Hills is home to “The Alex”. This is a popular hotel and nightclub.

Looking for recreation? Windemere Road Park has a climbing wall. There is also a flying fox and a skate bowl. George Street and Hanover Drive Parks offer off-leash areas for dogs. Scribbly Gums Conservation Area features mountain bike trails.

Alexandra Hills is a suburb of contrasts. It’s residential but close to nature. It developed later but grew quickly. It has a strong community and plenty of amenities. Take a moment to appreciate Alexandra Hills. Its story reflects the spirit of Redland City.
