Sweeping across the San Diego skyline, KMYI’s radio waves have painted the city with music for decades. KMYI, broadcasting at 94.1 MHz, has been a constant companion for San Diegans. It’s the oldest continuously operating FM station in the area, a testament to its enduring appeal. Located in the Kearny Mesa neighborhood, its transmitter perched high atop the KGTV Tower in La Jolla, KMYI blankets the metropolitan area with its hot adult contemporary format. Initially, in 1949, KMYI, then KFSD-FM, simulcasted its AM sister station’s middle-of-the-road music and news. As FM radio gained popularity, KMYI transitioned to classical music, a format it held for nearly four decades, becoming a beloved source of sophisticated sounds. The station’s call letters and formats danced through the years, from classic hits as “94.1 The Eagle” (KXGL) to soft adult contemporary as “K-Joy 94.1” (KJQY). KMYI even had a stint playing oldies, capturing the nostalgic hearts of its listeners. In a unique twist, during the fall of 2001, KMYI, under the temporary callsign KMSX, played Christmas music non-stop while conducting a listener poll. The results, revealed on Christmas Day, ushered in the current hot AC format and the station’s identity as “My 94.1”, later evolving into “Star 94-1”. KMYI is also one of the few Hot AC stations to air the popular “On Air with Ryan Seacrest”. The station continues to evolve, broadcasting in HD and offering diverse programming on its sub-channels, from news and talk to a bilingual classic hits format branded as “Retro”. KMYI has seen a parade of morning shows grace its airwaves, each leaving its mark on San Diego’s radio landscape. From Jagger and Kristi to the popular “Jeff and Jer Showgram”, and later “AJ in the Morning”, KMYI has consistently sought to connect with its audience through engaging personalities. Currently, “Jesse and Tati” bring their vibrant energy to the morning drive, keeping San Diegans entertained and informed as they start their day. KMYI remains a vital part of San Diego’s sonic tapestry, a star shining brightly in the city’s diverse media landscape.
