Five shots shattered the night. This is the tragic story behind Maria Hernandez Park. Before us lies a green space dedicated to a brave woman. Maria Hernandez fought tirelessly against drug dealers in her Bushwick neighborhood. This park stands as a testament to her courage.

Born in Brooklyn in 1953, Maria Hernandez was a local girl. She attended public schools and studied accounting at NYU. Maria and her husband decided to take a stand. They wanted to evict the drug dealers plaguing their community. They organized block parties to rally support. They educated neighbors about the dangers.

Tragically on August 8 1989, Maria’s activism came at a terrible price. She was shot through her apartment window on Starr Street. She succumbed to her injuries. Her death shocked the community. The city renamed Knickerbocker Park in her honor. It became Maria Hernandez Park.

Before Maria’s dedication, this space had a different identity. It was once known as Knickerbocker Park. The City of Brooklyn bought the land from various owners. One notable seller was circus impresario Phineas T Barnum. By 1896, the park had transformed. It became a showplace for the neighborhood. Bushwick Park was a hub of activity. People enjoyed holiday celebrations. Croquet matches and baseball games were common. Dancing filled the air with joy.

The park evolved over time. In the 1930s, playground equipment arrived. Sliding boards, sandboxes and swing sets delighted children. Later a softball field with bleachers was added. In 1994, Maria Hernandez Park received a major facelift. A five-day cleanup campaign revitalized the space. Workers removed debris and graffiti. They repaired benches and fences. The ball field was restored and sewer lines cleared.

Maria Hernandez Park has received accolades over the years. It was named the city’s “Park of the Month” in December 2006. A new basketball court and stage were added. Benches were painted. In January 2007, it won the Lily Bartle Park of the Month award. Recent renovations from 2016 to 2022 have further improved the park. A new basketball court and handball court were built. New fitness equipment was installed. Spray showers and benches provide comfort. A brand-new performance stage hosts events. The playground was completely rebuilt.

Today Maria Hernandez Park is more than just a park. It is a symbol of community resilience. It honors the memory of a woman who fought for what she believed in. As you wander through this vibrant space remember Maria Hernandez. Remember her dedication to making Bushwick a better place. The park has wheelchair-accessible entrances. The park also has a dog run area. It is the only off-leash area in Bushwick. The dog run is expected to be renovated in January 2025. It will have doggy turf and drinking fountains.
