Peeking through Milan’s modern skyline stands a testament to faith. It is the Chiesa parrocchiale di San Bartolomeo Apostolo. This church has a tale of resilience and relocation.

Let’s journey back to the 11th century. The original Chiesa di San Bartolomeo stood near the Navigli canal. It was a humble beginning for a church destined for significance.

Time marched on. The church underwent changes. Cardinals Carlo and Federico Borromeo commissioned Francesco Maria Richini to remodel it. The Chiesa di San Bartolomeo became a favored spot for Milanese aristocracy.

In 1683 Countess Teresa Gordone Serbelloni gifted the church a precious icon. It was the Madonna del Buon Aiuto. This icon was a copy of Lucas Cranach the Elder’s original. It added to the church’s growing importance.

For centuries prominent Milanese families chose Chiesa di San Bartolomeo as their final resting place. The Bascapè, Brivio and Melzi families were among those interred here. The church became a sanctuary of memories.

The year 1848 brought turmoil to Milan. During the Cinque Giornate a tragic event unfolded. Austrian soldiers stormed the Chiesa di San Bartolomeo searching for a rebel. Frustrated they murdered the parish priest.

A new chapter began for Chiesa di San Bartolomeo in 1861. Urban development demanded the church’s demolition. A new Chiesa di San Bartolomeo arose on Via Moscova. Architect Maurizio Garavaglia designed it. The new design echoed the old. The spirit of the church lived on.

Inside the Chiesa di San Bartolomeo many treasures from the old church found a new home. The monument to Karl Joseph von Firmian is a highlight. This neoclassic monument survived removal by Napoleon’s troops.

The high altar holds the icon of Madonna del Buon Aiuto. This icon has a special place. Teresa Gordone Serbelloni gifted it.

Look at the fourteen Stations of the Cross. Adrian Paci created these artworks in 2011. Paci is an internationally acclaimed artist.

The altar dedicated to San Bartolomeo features a painting of the saint’s martyrdom. Daniele Crespi painted this. Crespi was a leading figure of 17th-century Lombard art.

Entering the Chiesa di San Bartolomeo observe the parquet floor. The parquet floor is a unique feature.

Today the Chiesa di San Bartolomeo continues its mission. It welcomes people. It serves as a testament to Milan’s history. The Chiesa di San Bartolomeo stands as a symbol of faith and art.
