In the heart of Seoul, a quiet monument stands as a testament to a man’s unwavering dedication to his nation. This is the 고하송진우선생동상 (Goha Song Jin-woo Seonsaeng Dong-sang), a tribute to Song Jin-woo, a prominent figure in Korea’s fight for independence. Song Jin-woo, known by his pen name Goha, was more than just a journalist. He was a fervent nationalist, a politician, and a symbol of resistance against Japanese colonial rule. The 동상 (dong-sang), or statue, captures his resolute spirit.

Born in 1889, Song Jin-woo witnessed his country’s struggles firsthand. He channeled his passion into education and journalism, becoming a key figure at the Dong-a Ilbo newspaper. The Dong-a Ilbo, under Song Jin-woo’s leadership, became a powerful voice for Korean nationalism. It championed movements like the Home Product Promotion Campaign and the Private University Establishment Movement. It dared to challenge the Japanese authorities, even when it meant facing censorship and imprisonment. Song Jin-woo served as the paper’s chairman and editor-in-chief multiple times, always returning to his post despite the personal risks.

His commitment to his beliefs led him to participate in underground independence movements. Following the March 1st Movement in 1919, he was imprisoned for his activism. This experience only strengthened his resolve. The Dong-a Ilbo continued to publish articles critical of the Japanese government, leading to repeated suspensions. One instance involved a doctored photo of Olympic marathon winner Sohn Kee-chung, where the paper removed the Japanese flag from his uniform. Such acts of defiance, though small, fueled the spirit of resistance among Koreans.

After Korea’s liberation in 1945, Song Jin-woo declined a powerful position offered by the departing Japanese administration. He saw it as a form of collaboration. Instead, he focused on establishing democratic institutions, founding the Korea Democratic Party. Sadly, his unwavering patriotism made him a target. He was assassinated on December 30, 1945, by members of the White Shirts Society, a far-right terrorist group.

The 고하송진우선생동상 serves not only as a memorial to Song Jin-woo but also as a reminder of the sacrifices made for Korean independence. His story echoes through the very streets of Seoul, urging us to remember the courage and resilience of those who fought for freedom. It stands as a symbol of the indomitable spirit that shaped modern Korea.
