Beneath the bustling city of Zhuhai, hidden from everyday view, lies the Guangchang Pump Station. This unassuming structure plays a crucial role in quenching Macau’s thirst. It’s a vital link, a silent partner in the daily lives of nearly 680,000 people across the border. The Guangchang Pump Station is part of a larger story, a tale of two cities bound by the need for fresh water. For over six decades, Zhuhai has been Macau’s primary water source, a relationship solidified by the Zhuhai West-East Water Transfer Project. This project, a testament to cross-border cooperation, features a network of pipelines that carry life-giving water across the Modaomen Waterway. One of these pipelines, the fourth and newest addition, connects directly to the Guangchang Pump Station. This pipeline, completed in April 2019, represents a significant leap in capacity, boosting the daily water supply to Macau from 500,000 to 700,000 cubic meters. Its construction was a feat of engineering, involving the longest hydraulic jacking operation in Asia. Imagine the 24/7 hum of activity as crews worked tirelessly to complete this vital artery, a hidden marvel beneath the surface. The Guangchang Pump Station is more than just a pump station. It’s a symbol of collaboration, innovation, and the essential role of infrastructure in sustaining communities. While it may go unnoticed by most, its steady operation ensures that life flows uninterrupted in Macau. The station itself is slated for replacement, a sign of continuous improvement and commitment to the future of this vital water link. As the Xi River enters its flood season, the Guangchang Pump Station plays its part in mitigating the annual salt tide in the Pearl River estuary. It’s a reassuring presence, a silent guardian against the intrusion of saltwater, ensuring that Macau’s taps continue to flow with fresh, clean water.
