The stories of the Saints take us to ancient places and times. This place, this chapel right here in front of us, is dedicated to Saints Nabore and Felice. They were two soldiers from North Africa who arrived in Milan in the fourth century. They served in the army of Maximian, the emperor at the time. They became Christians and were executed for deserting at Lodi Vecchio at the time called Laus Pompeia. Their bodies were brought back to Milan to be buried in a basilica that was later called the “Naboriana.” Their worship slowly declined, and with it, the church until the 13th century when the Franciscans revived the worship of both. In 1799 the martyrs were moved to the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio. But the busts containing their skulls had disappeared and were found 160 years later in the possession of a Belgian antiquarian. The story of the Saints Nabore and Felice is intertwined with the story of Saint Savina, who cared for them in prison before their execution and hid their bodies to take them back to Milan. The history is long and fascinating and we can get into other stories later. For now, let’s continue.
