Behold the Ringerkolonnade. Its elegant sandstone columns stand proudly. They once connected Potsdam’s City Palace and the Marstall. This architectural gem is more than just a pretty sight. It’s a living testament to Potsdam’s rich history and resilience.

Frederick the Great himself commissioned the Ringerkolonnade. He envisioned it as a way to enhance the Lustgarten. The Lustgarten was originally an exercise ground created by his father. The colonnade’s design was entrusted to Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff. Knobelsdorff chose a Corinthian order. He adorned it with playful putti. He added graceful vases. Most striking are the wrestling figures. These sandstone wrestlers gave the colonnade its name.

The Ringerkolonnade wasn’t always here. It was moved during the demolition of the City Palace. This was a sad displacement for such a historically significant structure. Later a portion was thankfully returned to its original location. However its sculptures were separated. They waited patiently for restoration. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Jürg and Elisabeth Schacher Foundation and the Pietschker-Neese Foundation within the German Foundation for Monument Preservation. They have been restored piece by piece. They were put back one by one. A huge undertaking requiring substantial funding. The restoration cost approximately 140000 Euros.

Over the years the Ringerkolonnade has undergone several phases of restoration. The restoration has carefully used many original parts. In the 1970s half of the colonnade was relocated. It found a new home near the Neptune fountain. But even there time took its toll. Eventually many sculptures had to be stored safely until the full restoration was possible.

Today the Ringerkolonnade stands once more in its rightful place. It is a symbol of perseverance. It stands as a landmark of Potsdam’s remarkable history. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty. Let the artistry and history of the Ringerkolonnade transport you back in time. It is a true masterpiece. A perfect example of Potsdam’s resilience. It is a beautiful place for a quiet moment of reflection.
