Was there ever a man more dedicated to the Episcopal High School than Reverend Jess Borg? Here at the Doctor Jess Borg Baseball Field, that question hangs in the air like a high fly ball. The field itself is a testament to Borg, the school’s founding headmaster. He served from the school’s inception in 1983 until 1995, guiding it through its formative years. Doctor Jess Borg Baseball Field sits on the 34-acre campus of Episcopal High School in Bellaire, Texas. The school, founded by Houston business leaders and Episcopal Church figures, opened in 1984. Initially, it welcomed 150 students in grades nine and ten. The campus has a rich history, predating the school. Originally, it housed Marian High School and the Congregation of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament. The land was purchased from a developer who had planned to erect a high-rise building, a plan met with resistance from local residents. This paved the way for Episcopal High School to acquire the property. The school underwent significant expansions over the years. In 2001, a fundraising campaign culminated in new facilities. These included a classroom building, a library, a student center, a gymnasium, a field house, a track, and, of course, the stadium complex where Doctor Jess Borg Baseball Field is located. More recently, in 2012, the Jack T. Trotter Academic & Sciences Building opened, and in 2017, the Hildebrand Athletic Center was added. Imagine the roar of the crowd, the crack of the bat, the cheers echoing across this field. It’s not just a baseball field; it’s a symbol of the school’s commitment to athletics, one of its Four Pillars, alongside academics, arts, and religion. The Episcopal High School Knights have a history of success on this field, a fitting tribute to the man whose name it bears. Doctor Jess Borg’s legacy extends beyond the baseball diamond, shaping the very foundation of Episcopal High School. He laid the groundwork for a thriving institution that continues to grow and evolve. So, next time you’re here at Doctor Jess Borg Baseball Field, take a moment to appreciate the history and the legacy that surrounds you. It’s more than just a game; it’s a story of vision, dedication, and the enduring spirit of a community.
