Didn’t the earth tremble when Joaquín Rodríguez, better known as Costillares, walked this very ground? Costillares, a name synonymous with bullfighting, echoes through Madrid’s history. He was more than just a matador. He was a revolutionary.

Costillares was born in Seville in 1743. His father, Luis Rodríguez, was also a matador. Young Joaquín followed in his father’s footsteps. The family’s work in a slaughterhouse gave Costillares unique insights. He studied bull anatomy there. This knowledge later proved invaluable in the bullring.

He began his bullfighting career with Pedro Palomo. Soon, Costillares gained recognition in Seville. He triumphed at the Real Maestranza bullring. In 1767, he debuted in Madrid. A fierce rivalry ignited with Pedro Romero.

Costillares became the darling of the aristocracy. Romero remained the people’s favorite. Between 1780 and 1790, Costillares regularly appeared in Madrid’s bullfights. Despite a severe injury in 1782, he persevered.

Costillares’ impact on bullfighting is immense. He didn’t just perform passes. He perfected the banderillas pass. He improved the spear pass. This better defended the horses. Costillares extended the cape’s use. His skill with the muleta overshadowed previous matadors.

He is credited with creating the verónica. This is a fundamental cape movement. Costillares also invented the estocada al volapié. This involves a final thrust with the sword. Costillares structured bullfighting teams. Matadors became the leaders. He divided the bullfight into three distinct stages. These are called tercios. Costillares even designed the first suit of lights. It is the predecessor to the dazzling costumes worn today.

Costillares died in Madrid in 1800 at the age of 56. He transformed what some saw as barbaric into an art form. His rivalry with Pedro Romero birthed a competition. It was between the bullfighting schools of Seville and Ronda. Costillares’ innovations resonate even now. He is considered a father of modern bullfighting.

So, as you stand here, remember Costillares. Feel the echoes of the crowds. Imagine the clash of wills between man and beast. He forever changed the art of bullfighting. His legacy remains etched in Madrid’s heart.
