Envision a formidable fortress, a symbol of power and ambition. The Porta del Castello Viscontego whispers tales of Milan’s vibrant past. This gate once stood as a crucial part of the Castello Sforzesco, a castle that has witnessed centuries of Milanese history. Originally, the castle wasn’t a Sforza creation at all. It began as the Castello di Porta Giova, built by Galeazzo II Visconti between 1360 and 1370. This original structure was integrated into the city walls, incorporating a gate known as Porta Giova or Porta Zubia. It was a square fortress, a substantial structure with 200-meter-long sides and thick walls. The Visconti lords ruled from within these walls, until the Ambrosian Republic briefly seized control in 1447, damaging the castle in the process. Then, in 1450, Francesco Sforza took the reins of Milan. He saw the potential in the damaged Castello di Porta Giova and began its transformation into the grand Castello Sforzesco. He envisioned it as his residence, a symbol of the Sforza dynasty. The Porta del Castello Viscontego became a key entrance into this evolving power center. His son, Galeazzo Maria Sforza, continued the work after Francesco’s death, expanding the fortifications and refining the castle. The castle’s fortifications were further enhanced in the 16th century, adapting it to a modern star fort design with twelve bastions. The Porta del Castello Viscontego, though a remnant of an earlier era, stood within these amplified defenses. It bore witness as Milan changed hands between powers. The castle’s Torre del Filarete met a dramatic end, exploding in 1521 while the castle housed a weapons depot. This explosion underscores the castle’s role not just as a residence, but as a military stronghold. The Porta del Castello Viscontego remained a steadfast entry point throughout. Now, while we gaze upon the Porta del Castello Viscontego, we see a fusion of architectural styles. It’s a tangible link to the Viscontis who laid the foundation and the Sforzas who transformed the castle into an enduring symbol of Milan.
