Imagine stepping back in time to 1749. Picture a small village taking root near the Steinbinde forester’s lodge. This is the story of Grünau.

Grünau started as “Grüne Aue” with just a few families. These families came from the Pfalz region. They sought a new beginning near the Dahme River.

King Frederick II of Prussia had a vision. He wanted to establish farming villages. Müggelheim, Friedrichshagen, and Grünau were all part of this plan. The settlers hoped to cultivate vineyards. However, the colder climate dashed their dreams of wine production.

The resourceful settlers adapted. They turned to cotton spinning. They even tried silk worm breeding. The Seven Years’ War disrupted this progress. By 1800, Grünau’s population dwindled to a mere 59 residents.

But Grünau’s story didn’t end there. Boat building and laundry businesses emerged. These industries breathed new life into the village.

Theodor Fontane, a renowned writer, captured Grünau’s idyllic charm. He described it in his “Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg”. His words drew attention to the area’s beauty.

The 19th century witnessed a surge in water sports. Grünau transformed into a popular destination. Boathouses and restaurants sprung up along the riverbanks. Wealthy citizens built villas and summer homes. By 1900, Grünau boasted a population of 2,500.

In 1866, the Berlin-Görlitz railway opened a station in Grünau. This made it easier for Berliners to escape the city. They came to enjoy the natural surroundings. Regular rowing regattas further boosted Grünau’s appeal.

Grünau officially became part of Greater Berlin in 1920. The regatta course in Grünau hosted the 1936 Summer Olympics. Rowing and canoeing competitions took place here. This event cemented Grünau’s international reputation.

Today, you can still visit the regatta course. The grandstands remain a popular attraction. Grünau’s Wassersport Museum showcases the area’s rich history. It features exhibits related to aquatic sports.

Take a stroll through Grünau. Imagine the echoes of the past. Think of the settlers. Envision the bustling riverfront. Picture the Olympic athletes. Grünau is a place where history and nature intertwine. It is a testament to resilience and transformation.
