Did Kaiser Wilhelm I ever imagine a 55-meter-tall tower dedicated to him in the Grunewald forest? Probably not. But the Grunewaldturm stands here today as a testament to his 100th birthday. Originally called the Kaiser Wilhelm Tower, this striking red brick structure, nestled among the trees of the Grunewald forest, offers a journey back to the late 1800s. The Grunewaldturm, designed by Franz Schwechten, the architect behind the Kaiser Wilhelm Church in Charlottenburg, stands as a symbol of Brandenburg’s architectural heritage. The gothic brick style echoes the region’s rich past. Inside, a marble statue of Kaiser Wilhelm I greets visitors. Four iron reliefs depict important figures of his era: Albrecht von Roon, Helmuth von Moltke, Otto von Bismarck, and Prince Frederick Charles of Prussia. The climb to the viewing platform is an adventure in itself. 204 stairs wind upwards, leading to a breathtaking vista. From 36 meters above the ground, and a stunning 86 meters above the Havel’s water level, the panoramic view encompasses the Grunewald forest and beyond. On a clear day, even Potsdam can be glimpsed in the distance. After descending from the heights of the Grunewaldturm, a welcoming beer garden awaits. Enjoy refreshments with a view of the tranquil Havel Lake. The Grunewaldturm isn’t just a tower; it’s a gateway to history and nature. It’s a reminder of a bygone era, a place to connect with Berlin’s past while enjoying its natural beauty.
