Stepping onto the grounds of the Los Angeles Leadership Academy, one can almost feel the hum of ambition. This isn’t just any school. The Los Angeles Leadership Academy is a free charter school system known for its near-perfect college acceptance rate. Its alumni have graced the halls of prestigious universities like Harvard, Stanford, Northwestern, Brown, and UC Berkeley. Founded in 2002 in Koreatown by Roger Lowenstein, a former criminal defense attorney, the Los Angeles Leadership Academy started with a vision. Lowenstein wanted to create a place where students weren’t just prepared academically, but also nurtured into community activists, reflecting his own liberal views. Initially, the school rented space from the Immanuel Presbyterian Church and enrolled almost 120 sixth graders in its first year. The plan was to add a grade each year, with high school expansion coming later. Finding students wasn’t difficult. Local public middle schools were overcrowded. Parents sought a safe and enriching environment for their children. The Los Angeles Leadership Academy became a beacon of hope. The school has a fascinating history of growth and relocation. By 2008, it operated on two campuses: a high school in the former Florence Crittenton Center in Lincoln Heights and a middle school in Koreatown. A major shift occurred in 2010 when the academy acquired the 2.5-acre former Salvation Army campus, also in Lincoln Heights. This consolidated the K-8 programs, and the Koreatown campus was eventually closed. Today, the Los Angeles Leadership Academy boasts a unique dual-language immersion program in Spanish and English, aiming to cultivate bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural students from kindergarten through 12th grade. This allows graduates the freedom to pursue higher education in various countries, opening doors to universities in Spain, Mexico, Chile, or any English-speaking nation. The Los Angeles Leadership Academy stands as a testament to the power of vision and dedication. It emphasizes not only academic excellence but also personal growth and community engagement, fostering well-rounded individuals ready to make a difference in the world.
