What if houses could whisper secrets of Seoul’s elite? Here we are in front of Yi Jungu’s House in Gahoe-dong. This isn’t just any house. It is a window into a world of powerful families and prized cultural assets.

Bukchon means Northern Village. It is a unique Korean neighborhood. Traditional Korean houses stand side by side. They bear the marks of time. These marks have turned into prized cultural assets.

Once, Bukchon was the exclusive residential area for high-ranking courtiers. Members of the royal family also resided here during the Joseon Dynasty from 1392 to 1910. Not just any official could live here. Historical records show only members of the most powerful Old Doctrine faction could reside here.

The early 20th century brought large-scale housing development to Bukchon. The hanoks you see clustered here were mostly built around the 1930s. They showcase modern architecture and inner courtyards.

Notice the efforts to blend conservation with creative evolution as we stroll these alleyways. Yi Jungu’s House in Gahoe-dong is prominent enough to be a landmark. Built in the late 1930s, it stands out. It has well-preserved granite outer walls. It also features a French-style pointed roof. This house is designated as Seoul Municipal Cultural Material.

Many years ago genuine Korean-style houses were removed around here. They were replaced by a large-scale luxury housing complex. Foreign companies and embassies mostly rent these houses.

Bukchon offers small museums and houses. They give hands-on experience in traditional Korean culture and lifestyle. Seoul City purchased some of the traditional-style houses here. The city government then selected resident custodians to run small museums. They display decorative knots, amulets and needle works. Some houses offer guided tours and tea culture sessions.

The Bukchon Cultural Center was originally the house of Min Hyeong-gi. He was a financial official in the late Joseon period. Palace carpenters built the house in 1921 copying Yeongyeongdang. This is a Confucian literati-style mansion within Changdeok Palace.

Bukchon is changing quickly. Preservation of the archaic landscape seems to be the priority here. It is the way to maintain the area’s originality.

Yi Jungu’s House stands as a reminder. It reflects a time when powerful families shaped Seoul’s landscape. Its granite walls and unique roof tell a silent story. It is a story of tradition, power, and the changing face of a neighborhood. It is a story that continues to unfold with each passing year.
