Osaka’s Yumeshima Island whispers a tale of dreams built on reclaimed land. Here, at the edge of Osaka Bay, where the Yodo River meets the sea, lies a testament to human ambition. Yumeshima Island, a man-made marvel, spans 390 hectares. It wasn’t always this way. This island emerged from the waves, a product of Osaka’s “Technoport Osaka” plan. Initially conceived in 1988, the plan aimed to transform this area of Osaka Bay into a new city center. Yumeshima Island became a key part of this vision. The island’s journey has been a fascinating mix of successes and setbacks. In the early 2000s, Yumeshima Island was put forward as the site for the Olympic Village during Osaka’s bid for the 2008 Summer Olympics. The bid ultimately failed, but the dream of Yumeshima Island as a hub for international events persisted. Then, in 2017, Osaka set its sights on another ambitious goal: hosting the 2025 World Expo. Yumeshima Island was proposed as the perfect venue, and in 2018, Osaka won the bid. The Expo’s theme, “Designing Future Society for Our Lives,” resonated perfectly with Yumeshima Island’s own story of creation and innovation. Today, Yumeshima Island stands ready to welcome the world. Two high-standard container terminals operate in its southern part. The Yumemai Bridge connects it to Maishima, and the Yume Saki tunnel links it to Sakishima. A new station on the Osaka Metro Chūō Line now makes the island easily accessible. The journey from Osaka Station to Yumeshima Station takes approximately 30 minutes. Yumeshima Island also boasts the distinction of being the future home of MGM Osaka. This will be Japan’s first integrated resort and commercial casino, with construction slated to begin in April 2025. From waste disposal site to World Expo host, from Olympic dream to casino reality, Yumeshima Island is a testament to Osaka’s boundless ambition.
