St Catherine of Siena Church a Roman Catholic parish in the Archdiocese of New York has deep roots in the city’s history. Founded as a mission of St Vincent Ferrer Church in 1896 it served a predominantly Irish population. The original church was a humble three-story brick building. It wasn’t glamorous but it was a home for the community.

The current church building a stunning example of Arts and Crafts style architecture is quite something else. It was constructed from 1930 to 1931. The architect Wilfrid E Anthony created a masterpiece. The red brick exterior with white stone accents is strikingly beautiful. The interior is equally impressive. It’s a vast open space dominated by powerful arches. Each arch holds a chapel each chapel contains altars and shrines. The entire structure extends through the entire block. Its design is a unique blend of Gothic and Arts and Crafts styles. A truly rare architectural gem in the heart of New York City.

The church became a place of comfort and solace for patients staff and visitors. In 1957 a two-story convent and penthouse were built. This convent cost $100000. The design was by Starrett & Van Vleck. This expansion shows the church’s continuing growth and commitment to serving the community.

In 2015 a significant event occurred. The Archdiocese of New York announced a merger. This merger was between St Vincent Ferrer and St Catherine of Siena. Both churches remained open. This merger reflects the evolving nature of the church. It showed the need for collaboration and shared resources.
