How did the Zeisigberg get its name? This hill, a natural peak rising 402 meters above sea level, overlooks the city of Erfurt. It offers a unique perspective on the surrounding area. Zeisigberg played a small but significant role in Erfurt’s history during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1811, Napoleon ordered a 21-meter ceremonial column, “Die Napoleonsäule,” built on the common to celebrate the birth of his son. After Napoleon’s defeat at Leipzig in 1813, Erfurt was besieged. The citizens, jubilant at the French retreat in January 1814, burned and destroyed the Napoleonsäule on Zeisigberg as a symbol of their liberation. This act of defiance underscores the complex relationship between Erfurt and the French Empire during this tumultuous period. Today, Zeisigberg offers a peaceful retreat, a place where one can enjoy nature and reflect on the echoes of history. The hill stands as a silent witness to Erfurt’s resilience and its enduring spirit.
