Slipping through time, imagine yourself in 1699. Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville and Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville are paddling their canoes. They discover a Bayagoula settlement near the Mississippi River. This spot, in present-day New Sarpy, was originally called L’Anse aux Outardes, or Bustard’s Cove. New Sarpy became a melting pot of cultures. In 1722, French, German, and Canadian settlers received land grants on the east bank of the Mississippi River. They moved from the west bank, establishing the first east bank settlement at New Sarpy. This marked the beginning of the Second German Coast in 1730. Settlements now dotted both sides of the Mississippi River. New Sarpy’s population grew to 1,169 by the 2020 census. New Sarpy even had a moment of Hollywood fame. The film *Bug*, directed by William Friedkin, features scenes shot at Migliore’s Grocery and Boomerang’s Bar in New Sarpy. Filming took place in 2005, just before Hurricane Katrina. The film released in 2007, offering a glimpse of New Sarpy before the storm. Today, New Sarpy continues to evolve. It is a blend of old and new, where echoes of indigenous settlements, French explorers, and German settlers mingle with the sounds of modern life.
