Houba houba the famous cry of the Marsupilami echoes in my mind as I stand before Place Marsupilami. This isn’t just any square. It’s a vibrant tribute to the beloved comic strip character.
Place Marsupilami in Laeken Brussels is more than just a roundabout. It’s a transformation. It used to be a grey mineral roundabout lacking identity. Now it’s a colorful pedestrian space.
The change began with a city-wide naming contest. The name Marsupilami won overwhelmingly. It’s a nod to a legend. The legend says that Andre Franquin created the Marsupilami’s iconic cry while crossing Avenue Houba de Strooper. A nearby Marsupilami mural on a police station wall commemorates this.
The renovation is impressive. The new Place Marsupilami boasts colorful concrete. There’s a red rubber playground. It’s designed to be safe and fun for children. The landscaping is equally impressive. Existing trees remain. Thirteen new trees including four fruit trees have been planted. A water fountain adds a pleasant touch. Even a bike repair station has been thoughtfully included. All this aims to increase biodiversity.
The project took 80 working days. It began in mid-March 2022. Local residents were informed throughout the process. The entire area now feels welcoming and inviting. The transformation has revitalized the neighborhood.
The Place Marsupilami isn’t just a place. It’s a story. It’s a testament to community engagement. It’s a vibrant space that celebrates both a beloved comic book character and the spirit of urban renewal. It’s a place to relax play and appreciate the blend of art history and community. It’s a perfect example of how a simple square can become a destination. Now isn’t that houba houba fantastic?
