“What stories could these walls tell” I wonder as we approach Nhà thờ Giáo xứ An Chu. This church stands as a testament to Vietnam’s vibrant Catholic history. Let’s uncover some fascinating facts about Catholicism in Vietnam.

Catholicism’s seeds were sown in Vietnam around 1533. Portuguese and Spanish missionaries first arrived then. Early missions saw limited success initially. The arrival of the Jesuits in the 17th century marked a turning point. They successfully converted many locals in Tonkin and Cochinchina. Italian, Portuguese and Japanese priests led these early efforts. Francesco Buzomi and Diogo Carvalho created the first Catholic community in Hội An in 1615. Alexandre de Rhodes and Pero Marques converted over 6000 people in Tonkin between 1627 and 1630.

Jesuit missionaries played a crucial role in shaping the Vietnamese language. They developed an alphabet using the Latin script and diacritic marks. Francisco de Pina, Gaspar do Amaral, Antonio Barbosa and de Rhodes all contributed to this system. This alphabet called chữ Quốc ngữ is still used today. Girolamo Maiorica was an expert in chữ Nôm. This script remained important for conveying Catholic faith until the late 19th century.

French missionaries from the Foreign Missions Society joined in. Spanish missionaries of the Dominican Order also became active. Franciscans in Cochinchina and Italian Dominicans in Eastern Tonkin spread the faith. The Propaganda Fide sent missionaries too.

Pigneau de Behaine a French missionary priest played a key role in Vietnamese history. He became an advisor to Nguyễn Ánh. Pigneau hoped to gain concessions for the Catholic Church. He helped its expansion in Southeast Asia. He recruited French volunteers and purchased military supplies for Nguyễn Ánh. He served as a military advisor and de facto foreign minister. Gia Long’s funeral oration called Pigneau “the most illustrious foreigner”.

By 1802 Nguyễn Ánh conquered all of Vietnam. He became Emperor Gia Long. The Catholic Church had three dioceses then. The Diocese of Eastern Tonkin had 140000 members. The Diocese of Western Tonkin had 120000 members. The Diocese of Central and Southern Cochinchina had 60000 members.

Gia Long tolerated Catholicism. He permitted missionary activities due to respect for his French allies. Spanish missionaries were mostly in Tonkin. French missionaries were active in the central and southern regions. Six European bishops were in Vietnam at the time of his death. Christians numbered 300000 in Tonkin and 60000 in Cochinchina.

The story of Nhà thờ Giáo xứ An Chu is part of this bigger picture. It shows the enduring presence of the Catholic Church in Vietnam. Today the Catholic Church is still a vital part of Vietnamese society. It has about 7 million members and 27 dioceses. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Vietnam founded in 1980 represents them. Despite past challenges the Church continues to thrive here. It contributes to the country’s spiritual and social life.
