Ever walked among ancient oaks? Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve awaits you. This isn’t just any forest. It’s a 784-acre haven in the heart of North San Diego County near Escondido. Opened in 1992 Elfin Forest wasn’t always a recreational paradise.
Initially it was part of a larger water project. The Olivenhain Municipal Water District the San Diego County Water Authority and the US Department of the Interior collaborated. Their goal was to create the Olivenhain Dam and Reservoir. This vital project aimed to protect the region from severe water shortages. Construction took nine years.
