Built in 1674, the Wassermühle Ovelgönne whispers tales of ambition and resilience. Detlef Schwar, a prosperous miller, envisioned this watermill as an extension of his Moisburg mill. He chose this spot by an existing fishpond, constructing the Wassermühle Ovelgönne with an overshot wheel. Schwar built the mill at his own expense, intending it as a branch operation for his Moisburg mill. This venture aligned with the territorial ambitions of his ruler in Celle. The mill became a key element in the development of Ovelgönne, strengthening its position in border disputes with Buxtehude. Schwar later shifted his focus to Harburg, now part of Hamburg. The Wassermühle Ovelgönne then passed into the ownership of the Moisburg Vogtei. It was leased to six different milling families until 1872. A nearby farmer then purchased the mill, using it for his farm until the 1930s. The mill powered threshing and sawing machines. The industrial revolution rendered traditional mills like the Wassermühle Ovelgönne less vital. By the 20th century, its original purpose faded. The living quarters, renovated before World War I, housed weekend vacationers from Hamburg. After World War II, it served solely as a residence. By the 1970s, the Wassermühle Ovelgönne had fallen into disrepair. It attracted only artists drawn to decay and demolition crews. A 1981 photo book captured its dilapidated state, lamenting its hidden location. The press labeled it a disgrace, sparking calls for its removal. However, these reports also raised awareness. A shift in public opinion followed. The focus moved from demolition to preservation. In 1984, a new chapter began for the Wassermühle Ovelgönne. The city of Buxtehude launched a restoration program, and a dedicated association was formed. Over the following 25 years, they developed a comprehensive plan, run entirely by volunteers. Today, the Wassermühle Ovelgönne hosts milling and baking days, school tours, and social events. It has even become a sought-after wedding venue. The motto of the association, “Extra molinam non est vita” (There is no life outside the mill), reflects the enduring spirit of this historic gem.
