Did anyone ever tell you about the prison that wasn’t a prison? Right here in Windhoek once stood the Old Prison. It’s a fascinating building, but surprisingly, it rarely held actual prisoners within its walls. The Windhoek Correctional Facility, built in 1963 to accommodate about 900 inmates is what most people might consider the main prison. Today it houses about 1,300 inmates. But this Old Prison, though officially designated as such, served primarily as administrative offices for prison wardens on the ground floor and living quarters for prison wards upstairs. It’s a curious twist, isn’t it? Imagine living in a building designed as a prison, but enjoying the comforts of home. The real prisoners were kept in separate, more conventional cells behind the main building. This arrangement kept the stately appearance of the Old Prison intact while maintaining its practical function within the correctional system.
