Picture a tower inspired by Venice. That’s the Met Life Tower. It stands tall in New York City. Have you ever wondered about its story?

The Met Life Tower, also known as the South Building, occupies a full block in Manhattan’s Flatiron District. Its address is 1 Madison Avenue. The tower soars 700 feet high. It once held the title of the world’s tallest building. That was from 1909 to 1913.

Napoleon LeBrun & Sons designed the Met Life Tower. Construction took place from 1905 to 1909. The design drew inspiration from St Mark’s Campanile in Venice, Italy. Interestingly, the Met Life Tower was completed before the reconstruction of its Venetian model. St Mark’s Campanile collapsed in 1902.

The Met Life Tower features four clock faces. They are centered on all four sides of the tower. Each clock face is about 26 feet in diameter. The minute hands weigh 1000 pounds. These clocks were the largest in the world when they were built.

The tower’s exterior is divided into three sections. These resemble a column’s base, shaft, and capital. Originally, the tower was sheathed in Tuckahoe marble. During a renovation in the 1960s, limestone replaced the marble. This gave it a more modern look.

The tower’s design included oversized details. This was to make it appear smaller than its actual size. The Metropolitan Life Insurance Company intended the tower to be a symbol of integrity. It was featured in advertising with the slogan The Light That Never Fails.

The Met Life Tower has undergone several changes. An east wing was added. It is known as One Madison Avenue. This wing was renovated and expanded in recent years. Today, the tower houses a luxury hotel. It is called the New York Edition Hotel. The hotel boasts sophisticated accommodations. It also has Michelin-starred dining.

The Met Life Tower has landmark status. It got added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. It became a National Historic Landmark in 1978. The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission designated it a city landmark in 1989.

The Met Life Tower isn’t just a building. It is a piece of history. It reflects architectural trends and the ambitions of a major company. As we conclude our visit, remember the Met Life Tower. It once held the title of the world’s tallest building. Its light was a reassuring melody to hear on a trustworthy schedule.
