In the heart of Charleston, West Virginia, stands Grace Bible Chapel. It’s more than just a building. It’s a testament to faith, a beacon of hope, and a cornerstone of the community. Grace Bible Chapel’s story began in December 1979. A small group of dedicated individuals, yearning for a new fundamental New Testament Church in Charleston, gathered together. Their prayers were answered. The group, including Reverend Lyndel Stone and his wife Betty, along with families like the Pages and the Tolivers, officially founded Grace Bible Chapel. They began holding services in a rented sanctuary on East Washington Street in February 1980. Reverend Stone led the fledgling church, establishing its constitution. He served diligently until June 1980. After Reverend Stone’s departure, a series of seminary students and guest preachers filled the pulpit. Then, in December 1980, Reverend Aaron Lavender answered the call to lead Grace Bible Chapel. The church flourished under his guidance. They even purchased their own building. Reverend Lavender’s ministry continued until September 1986. He then left to pursue a full-time ministry in Kansas City. Once again, Grace Bible Chapel welcomed guest preachers, including ministers from Appalachian Bible College. During this time, a pivotal figure entered the scene: Reverend Matthew J. Watts. He, along with members of his congregation from Dunbar, began worshipping at Grace Bible Chapel. Reverend Watts served as interim pastor from June to September 1987. He oversaw the acquisition of the neighboring lot, which later became a much-needed parking lot. In October 1987, Reverend Ray Hoskins became the full-time pastor. He introduced new ministries and continued the church’s focus on evangelism and discipleship. In 1991, he launched “Project Z,” a vision for rebuilding or remodeling the church building. Reverend Hoskins departed in 1994. Then, on October 2, 1994, Reverend Matthew J. Watts returned to Grace Bible Chapel, this time as the permanent pastor. Under Pastor Watts’ leadership, “Project Z” came to fruition. In February 1996, Grace Bible Chapel moved into its current location at 600 Kanawha Blvd., West. For over 25 years, Pastor Watts has guided the church. He has spearheaded numerous community outreach programs and overseas missions, extending Grace Bible Chapel’s reach locally, nationally, and internationally. Today, Grace Bible Chapel, still under Pastor Watts’ leadership, continues its mission of faith, service, and community engagement. It stands as a living testament to the dedication and perseverance of its founders. It thrives as a vibrant center of worship and outreach in Charleston.
