“Kenilworth is a Church where everybody is somebody and God is all!” That’s their motto. Welcome to Kenilworth Baptist Church. This church has stood for over a century. It stands as a testament to faith and community.

Kenilworth Baptist Church’s story began in 1911. Evening services were conducted by Rev. W. Frank Johnson. These services took place at 36 Kenilworth Place. This location was just 100 feet south of where we are now.

In 1913, the church was officially organized. It started with 23 charter members. Dr. Elbert W. Van Aken became the pastor that same year.

Early growth defined Kenilworth Baptist Church. By 1923, membership soared to 300. Sunday school enrollment reached 200. The church was thriving.

Their first church building was erected in 1915. It was located on Bedford Avenue and Glenwood Road. Today, that site is home to Midwood High School.

The church moved to its present location in 1938. New York City wanted to build Midwood High School on the original site. The current location was purchased for $10,500. The new church structure cost $17,000. A generous gift helped reduce the debt.

Kenilworth Baptist Church has seen many pastors. Dr. Elbert W. Van Aken served for many years. Other pastors include Rev. Albert Dickson and Rev. John Shiebly. Rev. David Jester and Rev. William C. Nicholas also led the congregation. In July 1997, Pastor Lawrence Taylor became the pastor.

Initially, Kenilworth was an all-white congregation. As the community changed, so did the church. Today, the church is ethnically diverse. Members come from the West Indies, West Africa, Asia and South America. People from the United States also attend.

Kenilworth Baptist Church offers various ministries. There are ministries for women, men, youth and kids. They focus on outreach. The church also holds Bible study sessions. Sunday worship is at 11:00 am. Bible study takes place on Sundays at 10:00 am and Wednesdays at 7:30 pm.

Kenilworth participates in theological discussions. Pastors and theologians discuss controversial issues. The congregation is invited to participate.

The church also focuses on education. They offer a satellite program of the New York School of the Bible. The same instructors teach here. Certification is the same as the Manhattan site.
