Hidden beneath the bustling activity of McCarren Park lies a fascinating history. This 36-acre park wasn’t always a vibrant hub. It started life in 1903 as Williamsburg Park. Then it briefly became Greenpoint Park. Finally in 1909 it received its current name McCarren Park. This was thanks to Senator Patrick Henry McCarren. He secured the funding for its creation.

McCarren Park’s centerpiece is the iconic McCarren Pool. This Olympic-sized pool a designated historic landmark opened in 1936. It was part of Robert Moses’s ambitious plan. This plan involved building eleven public pools using Works Progress Administration funds. The pool featured innovative technology. This included underwater lighting and massive filtration systems. Hidden beneath the pool’s surface is a network of tunnels. These tunnels connected the former boiler room to the filtration plant. The pool unfortunately fell into disrepair. It closed in 1984. But after a significant restoration the pool reopened in 2012.

Before its 2012 reopening McCarren Pool served as a unique concert venue. This unexpected use transformed the vast empty space. Thousands of people attended free Sunday concerts. Artists like M.I.A. and Sonic Youth performed there. The transition back to a concert venue was difficult though. The preparation alone cost $250000.

McCarren Park has always been about community. But it wasn’t always this way. The park’s land was once divided by railroad lines. The city acquired each parcel between 1903 and 1905. Soon playgrounds were developed. One was for boys. The other was for girls. Then a children’s farm appeared in 1914. Young farmers tended to plots of land. They grew various vegetables. The Farm House even became a social center.

Even today quieter spaces exist within McCarren Park. The Green Dome Community Garden is a tranquil refuge. This 2500 square foot garden is a volunteer-run oasis. The garden restores a neglected area. It uses compostable waste from local restaurants. The garden showcases the enduring spirit of community within McCarren Park.

The revitalization of the McCarren Park Pool is a testament to resilience. Marvel Architects led the restoration in 2012. They creatively used salvaged Coney Island Boardwalk planks. They also used old wire baskets. These details add unique character. This transformation saved a piece of Brooklyn’s history. It made McCarren Park a more beloved place. The pool complex with its impressive history continues to thrive. This impressive area attracts people from all walks of life. It provides a place for recreation and community engagement.
