Sun-drenched sands beckon. Welcome to Resort Point Cove a hidden gem nestled within the sprawling Terranea Resort. Imagine a tranquil cove cradled by dramatic cliffs. This isn’t just any beach. Resort Point Cove boasts a rich history interwoven with the development of the Palos Verdes Peninsula.
Early in the 20th century the area was part of the vast Bixby cattle ranch. Harry Phillips a foreman for the Bixby family introduced farming to the arid land. He planted eucalyptus and pepper trees transforming the landscape. Japanese farmers leased coastal areas cultivating tomatoes and peas. This peaceful agricultural scene eventually gave way to ambitious development plans.
Frank Vanderlip a wealthy New York banker purchased the Palos Verdes Peninsula. His vision included a grand country club with a hotel. He also dreamt of an Italian hillside village populated by artisans. World War I interrupted Vanderlip’s plans. Later E G Lewis a visionary entrepreneur took over the Palos Verdes Project. His plans for a master-planned community included the development of Palos Verdes Estates.
Lewis was a controversial figure. Accused of fraud he ultimately declared bankruptcy. Despite his setbacks his vision significantly shaped the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The Palos Verdes Estates incorporated in 1939. It became a thriving community with the creation of parks and recreational facilities. The Palos Verdes Golf Club and the Palos Verdes Swim Club are testaments to this era.
Resort Point Cove itself became a cherished part of the Terranea Resort. Today you can enjoy kayaking paddleboarding or simply relax on the pristine sands. As you gaze upon the sparkling waters remember the ranchers the farmers and the visionaries who shaped this coastal paradise. Resort Point Cove is more than a beautiful beach. It’s a living legacy. A story etched into the very cliffs and sands. It is a story waiting to be discovered.
