Swimmers glide effortlessly through the shimmering water. The Stadtbad Mitte’s 50-meter pool stretches before you. Sunlight streams through enormous windows. This isn’t just a pool it’s a masterpiece.

The Stadtbad Mitte or James Simon Stadtbad as it’s also known is more than a swimming pool. It’s a testament to Berlin’s architectural and social history. Built between 1927 and 1930 this architectural marvel opened its doors to the public in 1930. Funded by the generous James Henry Simon it was designed by Carlo Jelkmann with technical assistance from Rudolf Gleye. Heinrich Tessenow masterfully created the interior design.

This magnificent structure replaced an older public bathhouse. The goal was simple provide affordable bathing facilities for all Berliners. Many lacked bathtubs or showers in their homes. The design embodied the “Licht Luft und Sonne” philosophy of the New Objectivity movement. Light air and sun were key elements in the building’s design.

The Stadtbad Mitte stood as a beacon of modernity. It was lauded as Europe’s most modern swimming pool at its opening. Imagine the excitement the day it opened. Berlin’s Oberbürgermeister Gustav Böß himself attended the grand ceremony. The building’s design is a testament to this. The four-story complex is built around four light wells. The exterior is clad in consistently beautiful clinker bricks.

Despite weathering the storms of war including a direct bomb hit on January 2nd 1945 the Stadtbad Mitte persevered. Quick thinking by the engineer Karl Pechtel minimized damage. The bathhouse reopened partially in June 1945. Thousands flocked daily to its facilities.

The Stadtbad Mitte hosted the first national swimming festival of the GDR in 1951. It remained open for many years. However it was eventually closed in 1985 for much needed renovations. After reunification extensive reconstruction revitalized this beautiful building. The Stadtbad Mitte reopened completely in 1993. In the early 2000s its facades were renewed. The technology was updated. The addition of James Simon’s name to the title in 2012 further cemented its legacy.

Today as you stand here you’re not just looking at a building. You’re experiencing a piece of Berlin’s past. It’s a vibrant reminder of community resilience and architectural excellence. A place where people gathered. A place that continues to bring joy and refreshment. The Stadtbad Mitte a legacy for generations.
