Born in Caracas, Antonio Bienvenida’s life was a whirlwind of passion, artistry, and courage. The Antonio Bienvenida Statue here in Madrid immortalizes this bullfighting legend. It captures the spirit of a man who dedicated his life to the thrilling, dangerous world of tauromachy. Antonio Mejias Jimenez, as he was originally named, became a symbol of Spanish bullfighting, especially beloved here in Madrid. He was the fourth son in a family of bullfighters, the Bienvenida dynasty. Though all his brothers followed the same path, Antonio’s star shone the brightest. His family relocated from Seville to Madrid. At the incredibly young age of five, Antonio faced his first calf, a testament to his family’s legacy. He debuted as a becerrista in 1936. Just three years later, at 17, he stood in the grand Las Ventas bullring in Madrid, facing bulls from the Ganaderia Terrones. His first major triumph came in 1941 at Seville’s La Maestranza. That same year, he took his alternativa, a significant rite of passage for bullfighters, with the bull Naranjito. Joselito de la Cal and Rafael Ortega served as witnesses. His career was a mix of exhilarating highs and terrifying lows. In 1942, he faced his first severe injury in Barcelona. Despite this setback, his career soared, peaking between 1953 and 1957. He even performed a solo fight with six Galache bulls for the benefit of his fellow bullfighters. His bold move in 1952, exposing the practice of manipulating bulls’ horns, brought him both admiration and animosity. Antonio Bienvenida’s story is also one of resilience. He faced numerous injuries, including fifteen gorings he jokingly called his “fifteen little deaths.” Yet, he always returned to the ring. Even his retirement in 1966, at the age of 44, wasn’t the end. He returned in 1971 for Curro Rivera’s confirmation. The Antonio Bienvenida Statue serves as a reminder of his final act of bravery. In 1975, at a tentadero (a trial of young bulls) on the El Escorial estate, he was fatally injured by a heifer. He died three days later in Madrid. This statue, sculpted by Luis Sanguino, stands as a tribute to the “Maestro de los tres pases combinados,” a man whose artistry continues to inspire bullfighters and enthusiasts alike.
