Gazing at Ebenezer Methodist, imagine the clatter of a horse-drawn carriage bringing the Reverend Fred Smith to this very spot in 1868. Ebenezer Methodist wasn’t always the brick structure we see today. Rev. Smith, a man of great determination, began its construction by hand. He laid each brick, envisioning a place where the community could gather in worship. The domed windows, a distinctive feature of Ebenezer Methodist, were carefully placed, allowing soft light to filter into the sanctuary. Ebenezer Methodist served its congregation for nearly 50 years before expanding. In 1915, a hall was added to accommodate the growing community and its needs. This wasn’t the first Methodist chapel in Kirk Michael. The village has a long history with Methodism. A previous chapel, built in 1824, stood nearby and was later used as a Sunday school. Interestingly, a farm building now separates the 1868 Ebenezer Methodist and the former Sunday school. Today, Ebenezer Methodist continues to serve its community. It hosts regular Sunday services and Sunday school, continuing the traditions established over a century and a half ago. The echoes of hymns and sermons still resonate within its walls, a testament to the enduring spirit of faith in Kirk Michael.
